I used to hate Winter. The holidays were what kept me going. . . until they were over. Then dreaded January appeared, followed by months of endless gray skies, freezing cold, and short days to boot . . it was downright depressing. I was born for summer, so what the heck was I thinking when I moved to LaPorte, the Snow Belt of Indiana?

The first winter I was confronted with deep snowdrifts, howling wind, and “lake effect” snow. What is “lake effect” snow, anyway, I wondered? I soon found out—gigantic flakes of heavy, wet snow that accumulates quickly!

But here’s the good part—I am so lucky to have nature at my doorstep. The beauty of nature appears at every window, door, and even the skylights in my little cottage. I love looking out at the snow capped pines, the open spaces, and seeing the myriad birds that come to the feeder.

I don’t hate winter anymore. I’ve come to understand that winter has its own minimal kind of beauty, and a peacefulness that no other season offers. I discovered that my secret to living in harmony in winter is to be close to nature. Nature grounds me, replenishes my spirit and feeds my soul. When is the last time you ventured out into nature?

Thank you, Michelle and Jill, for including me in your guest blog, and for inspiring me to create three short videos, each about a minute in length, which will play one right after the other. The first is A Snowy Day featuring birds at the backyard feeder. The second is The Squirrel, featuring a persistent female who isn't shy about getting a peanut. The third is Winter Wonderland, shot on a gloriously sunny day when the snow was so thick it blanketed the trees in my backyard. I hope you enjoy watching, and happy harmonious winter to all!

I began my journey into the world of video in 2000 with the purchase of my first video camera. Suddenly, the world opened up. I began talking to strangers. I began asking questions. I became less inhibited and more open. From behind the lens of my camera I discovered a passion for documenting stories, and soon began working with people to create their video memoirs. 1. I LOVED the videos! What a great way to capture the harmony of winter. I watched the bird one and thought, "Oh I love this" because I often watch the birds outside my window and never thought to capture it on video or even photograph them.

Then, I watched the squirrel and LOVED that one too . . . and the winter wonderland was beautiful! The sun shining through the trees, the iccles melting and the coffee cup in the snow! LOVED them all.

Getting out in nature is what helped me start to enjoy winter more myself. Thank you for sharing . . . I just might take a picture of the birds this winter. :)

  5. I was further inspired by Mimi's work in bringing people's lives to life through video. The video samples in her website's "screening room" remind me of the great work that is going on right "under our noses" in every day life. May we continue to embrace our highest dreams & desires and shine the light on all the good stuff going on in our world. MIMI, I'm glad to know you through Inner Alignment's Winter Harmony series!
YOU ROCK = WE ALL ROCK!
    With love & gratitude.
